British actor, born in Wednesbury, Staffordshire, England, United Kingdom on February 25, 1912, as Richard Cameron Wattis. He was a bald, bespectacled actor who became one of the pioneers of British comedies in film and television. He began his career at Croydon Repertory Theatre in 1934. He served in the Medical Corps of the British Royal Army in World War II. He died in a restaurant in London, England, United Kingdom on February 1, 1975, of a sudden heart attack. He is known for The Importance of Being Earnest (1952), The Man Who Knew Too Much (1956), and Sykes (1972).
