American actress who was born on October 26, 1926, in Canton, Ohio, USA as Elizabeth Jean Peters. She married Stuart Warren Cramer III (1954-1955), billionaire producer and director Howard Hughes (1957-1971), and producer and writer Stanley Hough (1971-1990), remaining with him until his death.
She graduated from East Canton High School and studied literature at Ohio State University. She also studied psychology and anthropology at the University of California. Her father died when she was 10, and her mother owned a tourist resort and lived a financially stable life. She won the title of Miss Ohio State Pageant in 1945, then got a contract with Fox.
She is known for Deep Waters (1948), It Happens Every Spring (1949), and Broken Lance (1954). After her marriage to billionaire Howard Hughes, she retired from the business for 13 years, and after her divorce, she married the producer Stanley Hough, who gave her the opportunity to appear in films again. She refused to work in any film that contained sexual scenes. She died on October 13, 2000, in Carlsbad, California, USA of leukemia.
