American actress, who was born in St. Louis, Missouri, USA on July 17, 1910. She was raised in a prominent social family, educated at Sarah Lawrence College, and began her acting career in theater through the University Players, a summer stock company at West Falmouth on Cape Cod in 1928 with her future husband Joshua Logan.
Through her work on Broadway, she made her way to cinema, where she performed many supporting roles. At the end of the fifties, she got a job as an artist-in-residence at the University of Denver, and she retired after several years until her death on September 3, 1980 in Cos Cob, Connecticut, USA. She was nominated for an Oscar for Best Supporting Actress. She is known for Gone with the Wind (1939), All This, and Heaven Too (1940), and The Nun's Story (1959).
