American actor who was the highest-paid actor during the 1920s. He created the comic character of the simple man who conquered difficult situations. He was born Harold Clayton Lloyd in Burchard, Nebraska, and later settled with his father in San Diego. He appeared in small roles in comedy films and became friends with aspiring filmmaker Hal Roach, who had formed his own studio in 1913, then they began collaborating. He is known for Just Nuts (1915), Safety Last (1923), and Girl Shy (1924). He died on March 8, 1971 in Hollywood.
