An American actress, who was the last wife of the famous English actor and filmmaker Charlie Chaplin. She was a teenager when she met Chaplin. Her father, Irish-American playwright Eugene O'Neill, strongly opposed her marriage to Chaplin. Eugene O'Neill refused to see his daughter after that, but she wasn't affected by her father's opposition because her father had abandoned his family when she was two years old. She was raised with her brother Shane by her mother, Agnes Boulton. At the age of seventeen, she became the talk of the British press when she was photographed with the novelist Truman Capote and then dated J. D. Salinger, who will become a famous author years later. She appeared on the covers of magazines and people expected that she would be a Hollywood star in her time, but her decision to marry Charlie Chaplin changed the course of her life. She gave birth to eight children, and one of her daughters, Geraldine Chaplin, entered the world of acting and had a distinguished career, as did Geraldine's daughter, who is also named Oona. Oona Chaplin died on September 27, 1991.
