In the early thirties, he turned to the cinema, where he excelled at playing the roles of foreign villains, and in the late fifties, he worked on television. In 1963, Joseph retired and sailed away from Hollywood, returning to his country, Malta, where he remained until his death on October 31, 1975 in Valletta, Malta. The Maltese government has issued two commemorative stamps in his memory.
