British actor, born in Camberwell, London, England, United Kingdom on March 10, 1905 as George Richard Haydon. Among his most important works are Alice in Wonderland (1951), Mutiny on the Bounty (1962), and The Sound of Music (1965). He started to work on the radio and achieved some success. He went to Broadway, where he performed some works in its theaters and signed a contract with 20th Century Fox, appearing for the first time on the screen in the movie Charley's Aunt (1941). He emerged as a star in comedies, such as Ball of Fire (1941). By the end of the forties, he had three experiences in directing with Paramount. He joined television and then worked for a long time as a voice actor in animation. He had a passion for gardening and avoided any public interviews. In 1943, he was engaged for several months to Maria Riva, the daughter of actress Marlene Dietrich. He died on April 25, 1985 in Los Angeles, USA of a heart attack.
