English writer and teacher, who was the first wife of British physicist Stephen Hawking. Her parents were Beryl and George Wilde. She grew up in St Albans in Hertfordshire, England. She studied languages and earned a Ph.D. in medieval Spanish poetry from Westfield College, London. She married Stephen Hawking in 1965 after she met him during a party through mutual friends before he developed ALS, which leads to a complete paralysis.
They had three children: Robert in 1967, Lucy in 1970 and Tim in 1979. They separated in 1990 and divorced in 1995. She aided her husband for years during his health problems, which continued to deteriorate until he was unable to move, and she helped him complete his work during those circumstances. Later on, she married Jonathan Jones, a musician who was a family friend. In 1999, she wrote her autobiography, "Music to Move the Stars, A Life with Stephen Hawking."
After Stephen Hawking separated from his second wife Ellen, he began a business relationship with Jane. In 2008, her autobiography was released in a much different version titled "Travelling to Infinity: My Life with Stephen." Her character was introduced to the screen, played by Lisa Dillon in the TV movie Hawking (2004), produced by BBC, and in The Theory of Everything (2014).
