Canadian actor born in Carman, Manitoba, Canada on October 27, 1910 as John Elmer Carson. He received two stars on the Walk of Fame in 1960 for his work on radio and television. He married Elizabeth Lindy (1938-1939), actress Kay St. Germain Wells (1940-1950) with whom he got two children, actress Lola Albright (1952-1958), and Sandra Jolley (1961-1963) and remained with her until he died on January 2, 1963 in Encino, California, USA from stomach and liver cancer. Among his most important works: Arsenic and old Lace (1944), Mildred Pierce (1945), and A Star Is Born (1954). He studied at Carleton College. He joined Hollywood in the end of the 1930s, and then he moved to Warner Company, where his performance developed and he got distinguished roles with major actresses. He sang and acted in his films. He was a pilot and he volunteered to join the US Air Force, but was rejected due to his height. He participated in World War II with General Douglas MacArthur's forces in the South Pacific. During the war, he starred on the radio and became a radio star, and in the early fifties, he joined television to achieve stardom.
