Canadian actor, born in Carman, Manitoba, Canada as John Elmer Carson. He received two stars on the Walk of Fame in 1960 for his work on radio and television. He married Elizabeth Lindy (1938-1939), Kay St. Germain Wells (1940-1950), with whom he had two children, Lola Albright (1952-1958), and Sandra Jolley (1961-1963), with whom he remained until he died on January 2, 1963 in Encino, California, USA from stomach and liver cancer. Among his most important works are Arsenic and old Lace (1944), Mildred Pierce (1945), and A Star Is Born (1954). He studied at Carleton College. He went to Hollywood in the late 1930s, and then he joined to Warner Bros. He sang and acted in films. He was a pilot and he volunteered to join the US Army Air Corps, but he was rejected due to his height. During World War II, he entertained General Douglas MacArthur's troops in the South Pacific. During the war, he became a radio star, and in the early fifties, he joined television, achieving success.
