British director, writer, editor, actor, and cinematographer. His family moved to Chingford, Essex, England, when he was three years old in order to avoid the war. He was born in Newport, Wales. He made the decision to become a painter early in life. Additionally, he developed an interest in European film, particularly the works of emerging French directors like Jean-Luc Godard and Swedish filmmaker Ingmar Bergman. He started studying at Walthamstow College of Art in 1962 and spent three years developing his mural painting skills before making his breakthrough to the big screen as a writer and director of films.
