American actor and dancer born July 17, 1899 in New York City, New York, USA as James Francis Cagney Jr. to a family of Irish-Norwegian descent. He received the New York Film Critics Circle Awards (NYFCC) in 1939 for Angels with Dirty Faces (1938). He won an Oscar in 1943 for...Read more Yankee Doodle Dandy (1942). He received a star on the Walk of Fame in 1960. He married Frances Vernon in 1922 with whom he had two children, and remained with her until his death. He became famous in the thirties and forties for his roles in gangs and then went on to play light comedic roles. He was ranked 45th in the 100 most famous actors of all time. His first artistic work was as a dancer in a dance group. He was president of the Actors Guild in 1942. He retired from acting and dancing in 1961 to spend time on his farm with his family. A commemorative postage stamp was issued to him in 1999. He died on March 30, 1986 (age 86) in Stanfordville, New York, USA.
