He was an assistant director to John Sayles on the independent film Matewan (1987),...Read more and he worked alongside a number of filmmakers, including Richard Linklater, John Schlesinger, and Steven Soderbergh, with whom he worked on King of the Hill (1993). Criminal (2004) was his debut feature film as a director and screenwriter. He directed a number of additional projects, including Magic Mike XXL (2015). He received an Emmy for Behind the Candelabra (2013), in addition to a DGA Award.
