British actor born July 27, 1882 in Bow, London, England, UK as George William Crisp. He received an Oscar in 1942, a DGA Honorary Award in 1957 and a star on the Walk of Fame in 1960. He married Helen Pease, Marie Stark. and Jane Murfin. His most important works include Wuthering Heights (1939), How Green Was My Valley (1941), and Lassie Come Home (1943). He fought in the British Army during the Boer War (1899-1902) in South Africa and got acquainted with the English leader Winston Churchill at the beginning of his political life, and with the outbreak of World War I (1914-1918), he worked in the British army intelligence. In World War II (1939-1945), he served in the United States Army and reached the rank of colonel. He graduated from Oxford University and was interested in theatrical work, where he worked as a theater director. He then starred in movies when he travelled to New Jersey and Hollywood. He devoted himself to acting and achieved great success that led him to win an Oscar in 1942. He died on May 25, 1974 (age 91) in Van Nuys, California, USA of a stroke.
