American actor, born in San Francisco, California, USA. He received a star on the Walk of Fame in 1960 for his radio work. He married actress Philippa Hilber. He was a jovial actor who made his stardom on the radio before heading to the cinema to work as a supporting actor, often the friend of the leading protagonist. He was found dead in his car on May 9, 1958 of a heart attack. Among his most important works are Spellbound (1945), The Jolson Story (1946), and To Each His Own (1946).
