American novelist and playwright who was born on August 15, 1887 in Kalamazoo, Michigan, USA. She wrote several books on American life in the first decade of the nineteenth century. She won the Pulitzer Prize for the story in 1925 for her novel So Big (1924). At the beginning of her life, she aspired to become an actress, but when she reached the age of seventeen, her father lost her sight, so she had to work as a journalist for the Appleton Daily She wrote Buttered Side Down (1912), A Kind of Magic (1963), and The Land Is Bright (1941). Some of her works have been adapted to movies, such as Giant (1956), Show Boat (1929) and Come and Get It (1936). She died on April 16, 1968 in New York City, New York, USA.
