An American actor, born in San Francisco, California, on October 11, 1888, to a theatrical producer father and an actress mother. Among his most notable films Way Down East (1920), Bachelor Apartment (1931), and The Royal Bed (1931). He is considered one of the first members of the film industry to successfully switch from acting to directing. His theatrical debut was in 1905, while his cinematic debut was in 1914. He directed some of Greta Garbo and Katharine Hepburn's early films. Sherman died on December 28, 1934, in Hollywood, California, of pneumonia.
