An American comedian, born in New York City, New York, on March 22, 1887, as Leonard Marx. Among his most notable films are Duck Soup (1933), A Night at the Opera (1935), and A Day at the Races (1937). Chico Marx was born to Franco-German Jewish immigrant parents, but he used an Italian accent in his comedy act. He was a gambler, a womanizer, and a skilled pianist before he took over the management of the act of his brothers (the Marx Brothers) and led them to their first Broadway show and the first movie contract with MGM. He was the eldest brother of Harpo Marx, Groucho Marx, Gummo Marx, and Zeppo Marx. He died on November 11, 1961, in Hollywood, Los Angeles, California, of a heart ailment.
