Raymond Massey was born in Toronto, Ontario, Canada, on August 30, 1896, as Raymond Hart Massey. He received two stars on the Walk of Fame in 1960 for his work in film and television. He married Margery Fremantle (1921-1929), with whom he had a child, then married actress Adrianne Allen (1929-1939), with whom he had two children, then married American actress Dorothy Whitney (1939-1982) and remained with her until she died.
Among his most notable films are Things to Come (1936), Arsenic and Old Lace (1944), and East of Eden (1955). Raymond Massey was educated at the University of Toronto and Balliol College, Oxford University. He joined the Royal Regiment of Canadian Artillery in World War I, served in France, and was wounded. After the war, he returned to Canada to work as a farmer on his land, but the limelight attracted him as he had previously acted in Siberia during the war, so he traveled to London to work in its theaters in 1922 and took acting as a profession. Raymond left the army in 1943 after being wounded in World War II, and because his mother and his wife Dorothy were Americans, he became an American citizen. Raymond Massey died on July 29, 1983, in Los Angeles, California, USA, of pneumonia.
