An Indian film actor, screenwriter, producer, and director. He is considered one of the leading method actors of Indian cinema. He has won several Indian film awards, including several National Film Awards and Filmfare Awards, and is best known for co-starring in the largest number of films submitted by India to compete for the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film. In addition to acting, screenwriting, and directing, Kamal has participated in films as a lyricist, singer, and choreographer. His film production company has produced several of his films. In 1990, he received the Padma Shri Award for his contributions to Indian cinema. He also received an honorary doctorate from Sathyabama University.
In 2009, he became one of the few Indian actors to complete 50 years in cinema. After many artistic projects in his boyhood, Kamal starred in the 1975 drama film Apoorva Raagangal, in which he played the role of a rebellious young man who falls in love with an older woman. He secured a second National Hindi Film Award for his portrayal of a naive, childlike amnesiac teacher in 1982's Moondram Pirai. He is especially known for his performance in Nayagan (1987). Since then, he has gone on to appear in other notable films, such as Anbe Sivam, as well as Dasavatharam, in which he appeared in ten different roles.
