American writer and novelist, born in Annapolis, Maryland, on July 1, 1892. He died in Hyattsville, Maryland, on October 27, 1977. He is known for his detective stories and some of his work has been turned into films, Double Indemnity (1944) and Mildred Pierce (1945) which are two of the best noir films of the forties, in addition to The Postman Always Rings Twice, which was adapted three times into films, once by the Italian Luchino Visconti in his Italian adaptation, Obsession (1943), without mentioning the source of the story, and twice in Hollywood in 1946 and 1981.
