He was born on November 7, 1938, in Boston, Massachusetts, USA, to an Austrian father and a Swedish mother. He graduated from Brandeis University, where he obtained a BA in anthropology, but he switched to acting after studying drama at the Actors Studio in New York. He worked during the sixties in the theater, appearing in the cinema in some light roles then turned to television and gained fame. His role on the screen in the movie Vanishing Point (1971) was a turning point in his career. Among his most important works are Petrocelli (1974), Deadline (1982), and The Limey (1999).
