American actor, producer and singer, born in Tacoma, Washington, on May 2, 1903. He was of English-Irish descent. He studied law at Gonzaga University in Spokane, but he practiced singing and playing drums with a local band. He left with some members of the band to Los Angeles in 1925, where they presented their singing shows and became famous. The radio network broadcasted their shows for 20 consecutive weeks, which prompted Paramount to include them in its film The Big Broadcast (1932). He had the largest sales of records in the world until his death, as it exceeded more than 600 million records. He's known for The Country Girl (1954), and Going My Way (1944) for which he won an Oscar for Best Leading Actor. He died in Madrid, Spain, on October 14, 1977.
