He worked at an advertising firm after graduating from college before starting at Newsweek magazine. After that, he worked for the Washington Times, covering both national and local news, then went on to work for the news magazine Pathfinder before starting to write for National Geographic in 1951. Later, he started penning children's stories such as The Silver Crown (1968) and A Report from Group 17 (1972). He was awarded the Newbery Medal for Literature in 1972. In 1974, he wrote Z for Zachariah. He passed away in Washington, USA.
