An American writer, novelist, and journalist, born in Brooklyn, New York, in the United States. He enrolled at Williams College in 1935, drawn by his passion for music and literature, but dropped out in his second year. In 1940, he graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in English from the University of Rochester. He worked at an advertising firm after graduating from college before starting at Newsweek magazine. After that, he worked for the Washington Times, covering both national and local news, then went on to work for the news magazine Pathfinder before starting to write for National Geographic in 1951. Later, he started penning children's stories such as The Silver Crown (1968) and A Report from Group 17 (1972). He was awarded the Newbery Medal for Literature in 1972. In 1974, he wrote Z for Zachariah. He passed away in Washington, USA.
