A French actor born on May 19, 1921, in Angers, France, as Daniel Yves Alfred Gélin. Daniel Gélin had three wives; actress and producer Daniele Delorme (1945-1954), with whom he had two children, Sylvie Hirsh (1955-1968), with whom she had two sons, and Lydie Zaks (1973-2002), with whom he had one child, remaining with her until his death. Among his most notable works are La Ronde (1950), The Man Who Knew Too Much (1956), Is Paris Burning? (1966), and Murmur of the Heart (1971). He worked with major directors, such as Alfred Hitchcock, Claude Lelouch, Jean Cocteau, Louis Malle, and Max Ophüls.
At the age of 16, Daniel left his home to study theatrical arts. He was mentored by Louis Jouvet and made his debut in 1940. Daniel began working in the cinema, playing small roles, and in 1949, he began playing major roles in films. However, his career was greatly affected by his turbulent relationships and depression that led to suicide attempts, as well as a long battle with alcohol and drugs. Moreover, he lost his 14-month-old son after he'd taken some pills, while another son of his died after a long struggle with cancer. He fathered actress Maria Schneider after an affair with French model Marie Christine Schneider. His children include actor, writer, and producer Xavier Gélin, actress Fiona Gélin, and actor Manuel Gélin. He died on November 29, 2002, in Paris, of kidney failure.
