An American actor, born in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, USA, as Jerome Silberman. His father was a Russian-Jewish immigrant, and his mother was of Russian-Jewish descent. He earned his Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Iowa in 1955. He served in the US Army from 1956 to 1958 as a paramedic in the Department of Psychiatry and Neurology at Valley Forge Army Hospital.
He began pursuing a career in acting in 1961, appearing in minor roles in several films, and he quickly gained recognition. He is known for Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory (1971), Young Frankenstein (1974), and The Producers (1967). Among his many nominations and awards, he received two Oscar nominations and two Golden Globe nominations, and won a Primetime Emmy Award in 2003.
He was married four times; to Mary Mercier, Mary Joan Schutz, with whom he had a son, Gilda Radner, and Karen Boyer. He was always opposed to any war fought by the United States of America. He passed away on August 29, 2016, in Stamford, Connecticut, USA.
