She then moved to live with her father and stepmother where she had a normal childhood and upbringing. She finished high school at Marymont School, and in the same year, she was awarded the title of Miss Beverly Hills. Hargitay then attended UCLA to study acting. She started her professional acting career in 1986 when she played an important role in Downtown. She is known for Law & Order: Special Victims Unit, Lake Placid, and Leaving Las Vegas.
