A German actor, born in Berlin, Germany. When WW II broke out in Europe, he was put in a foster home in Czechoslovakia, but he returned to Berlin the moment he had the chance. He dropped out of school to perfect his acting skills. After moving from East Berlin to West Berlin, he became well-known for his work in the theater and on the radio.
Because of his ability to speak various languages, he was able to work across Europe and Hollywood. He started his acting career in 1951 and, after a series of small or uncredited roles, he found a larger one in Marianne of My Youth (1955). His first non-German film was the British film Tiger Bay (1959).
In the 1970s, he began appearing in many television productions. He is known for Life Is Beautiful (1997), The Magnificent Seven (1960), and One, Two, Three (1961). He received several awards, such as Bambi Awards and German Film Awards. He was married to Myriam Bru, with whom he had two children, one of whom is the actor Christopher Buchholz. He passed away on March 3, 2003, in Berlin, Germany, from pneumonia.
