A Romanian actor who was born in Freidorf, Austria-Hungary, on June 2, 1904. Weissmuller received a Star on the Walk of Fame in 1960. Johnny Weissmuller died on January 20, 1984 in Acapulco, Mexico from complications of a stroke. Johnny was born to a father of German origin. He worked after school as a sales representative and elevator operator at the Plaza Hotel in Chicago. He participated in swimming championships, winning 52 local championships and 67 world championships. He also won five Olympic medals in Paris in 1924 and Amsterdam in 1928. Because of his athletic prowess, he made the movie Glorifying the American Girl (1929). MGM signed a contract with him in the Tarzan movie series, and he gained wide fame. Johnny Weissmuller retired in 1965 and devoted himself to business.He is best known for his roles in: Tarzan the Ape Man (1932), Tarzan Escapes (1936), and Tarzan's New York Adventure (1942).
