He began his acting career on stage, then moved to cinema and television, becoming a winning card in supporting roles. He got his first role in the film Le Doulos in 1961 in collaboration with director and screenwriter Jean-Pierre Melville, and then his works followed, such as the film Les camisards (1972), the film La communion solennelle (1977), the film Ne pleure pas (1978), the film Le pull-over rouge (1979), the film Carne (1991) in which he appeared as a desperate butcher, the series Les cinq dernières minutes (1977), and the series Les enquêtes du commissaire Maigret (1967).
