A British writer, born in Rushden, Northamptonshire, England. After completing his studies at Kettering Grammar School, he worked as a journalist and a shoe warehouse clerk, where he got ideas for his subsequent works. The Two Sisters was his first published novel and second book (1926). His first novel was turned down by many publishers before he was contacted by Jonathan Cape, the publisher, at the novelist Edward Garnett's recommendation. Before his novel was released, he was twenty years old. He then carried on writing, although at the time he was unsuccessful. In an effort to spread encouraging messages, the Royal Air Force instructed him to write only brief tales that focused on the experiences of soldiers serving in the war. The News Chronicle first published the story under the name "Flying Officer X." Along with introducing the characters of The Larkins (2021-2022), who initially appeared in the 1958 novel The Darling Buds of May, he also introduced the romance novels Love for Lydia in 1952 and The Feast of July in 1954. His novel was adapted into several of his literary works including the film Triple Echo (1972).
