An American actor, born in New Orleans, Louisiana, USA. He received a star on the Walk of Fame in 1960. He had three wives and three children. He is known for The Searchers (1956), King of Kings (1961), The Longest Day (1962), and Temple Houston (1963). At the age of four, he moved with his family to Milwaukee. In his teens, he worked in the North Shore Children's Theater. During the years of World War II, he performed in summer stock theater. He worked as a professional radio actor in 1945, and after graduating from Whitefish Bay High School, he enlisted in the US Navy.
He joined the University of California as a graduate student, studied radio and drama, and signed a contract with 20th Century Fox. He sustained a head injury due to an explosion on a film set, which required him to undergo multiple surgical operations. He died on May 27, 1969 in Los Angeles, California, USA from a stroke.
