An English actor, born in Weedon Bec, Northamptonshire, England, on October 25, 1886, as Leo Gratten Carroll. He married Edith Nancy de Silva Carroll 1926-1972) and had a child with her. He is known for North by Northwest (1959), Strangers on a Train (1951), Spellbound (1945), and The Man from U.N.C.L.E. (1964-1968). Carroll was one of the most distinguished actors in cinema and theater. He descended from a military family but left the military for his love for the theater. He worked as an actor and theater director until he had to serve in WWI.
After the war, he returned to America to work in its theaters, and in 1924, he decided to permanently reside in the United States of America, and his first work on Broadway was the play Havoc (1924). He caught the attention of Alfred Hitchcock, who made him star in many of his films. In the mid-fifties, he worked on television, performing the same characters he played in theater and cinema. He died on October 16, 1972, in Hollywood, Los Angeles, California, USA.
