An English actor, he was born in Springs, South Africa. He studied at a boarding school in Eswatini, then immigrated to Zimbabwe. He began acting shortly after his graduation. He also worked at a bank and for an airline in Africa. In 1958, he made his first flight from Rhodesia to the United Kingdom. He also worked at the British National Theater and the Royal Shakespeare Theater Company. He made his first appearance in a small role in Flame in the Streets (1961).
