An Egyptian author who obtained a Bachelor of Arts degree, as well as a Master of Arts degree from the Department of Greek and Latin Studies at the Faculty of Arts, Cairo University. He also studied at the University of Athens in Greece from 1961 to 1964, then traveled to Britain where he completed his studies and obtained a doctorate from the University of Bristol in England in 1967.
He held many positions, including the presidency of the Council of the Department of Greek and Latin Studies. He also chaired and participated in the membership of many councils and bodies. He worked as Undersecretary of the Ministry of Culture and Head of the Mass Culture Sector in the period from June 1985 until October 1987.
He has many translations from Greek and Latin, including "The Aeneid" by Virgil in collaboration with others, and the plays "The Bacchae", "Ion", "Seneca", and "Agamemnon". He also presented many literary works, including "Hassan Al-Zir" and "Shamhurash the Liar".
He received the State Encouragement Award in Translation, and the Cavafy Award in Translation in 2003, in addition to the Greek President Karolos Papoulias awarding him the Medal of the Hellenic Republic for his efforts in Greek studies. He died on 5 April 2017.
