A British actress, born in Southport, Lancashire, England, UK, on February 7, 1923, as Dora May Broadbent. She won the BAFTA Film Award for Best British Actress in 1962, the Laurence Olivier Theatre Award in 1995 for Best Actress in a Supporting Role for her role in the play "The Birthday Party", and the OBE in 1996 for her services to drama. She married Bill Lawton (1954-2008) and they had three children. She is known for A Taste of Honey (1961), Last of the Summer Wine (2000-2005), and The Fallen Idol (1948).
Dora's debut was on the Manchester stage at the age of 12, and at the age of 15, she joined the Oldham Repertory as an assistant theater director. During WWII, she joined the entertainment body of the armed forces. She retired in 2006 and devoted herself to charity work to help sick and stray animals. She passed away on July 23, 2014, in Hove, East Sussex, England, UK.
