A French writer and director, born in Auxerre, France. He co-wrote some of the films of Philippe de Broca and Louis Malle. His most important films include Cyrano de Bergerac (1990), which he directed and co-wrote, and which is based on a play by the French writer Edmond Rostand. The film won the César Award for Best Film, the César Award for Best Director, and the David di Donatello Award for Best Foreign Film. He also directed and co-wrote The Horseman on the Roof (1995), which he directed and co-wrote, and Bon Voyage (2003), which he directed and co-wrote. He also wrote the screenplay for That Man from Rio (1964), which was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Writing and Screenplay.
