A Finnish novelist and painter, who wrote in Swedish. She is also a painter with an honorary doctorate in philosophy, born in Helsinki, Finland, and studied drawing and oil painting in Stockholm, Sweden, in 1930, in Helsinki in 1934, and in Paris in 1938. She is the author of the Moominland book series, first published in 1945. The book was translated into over forty languages. She is the recipient of the Pro Finlandia Medal in 1976, the Hans Christian Andersen Prize in 1966, the Swedish Academy Prize in 1972, the Topelius Award in 1978, the Finnish National Prize for Literature in 1963, 1971, and 1982, the Helsinki Prize 1980, and the title of Honorary Professor in 1995.
