A Swiss writer and philosopher, best known for the novel "Night Train to Lisbon" (2004), which was adapted into the 2013 film, directed by Bille August and starring Jeremy Irons. He held a doctorate in philosophy in 1971. He focused much of his academic research on the philosophy of mind, epistemology, and ethics, then he occupied himself with analytic philosophy. His pseudonym is a composite of the names of two French philosophers: Blaise Pascal and Louis-Sébastien Mercier.
