An American actor, born in Cleveland, Ohio, USA. He was recruited by the US Army in the 1960s, where he was a platoon leader for the 4th Armored Division, 1st Infantry Division in the Vietnam War. Upon his return to the United States, he sang in the play The Boys from Syracuse and the play The Threepenny Opera. His film career began in 1968 with the film Uptight, directed by Jules Dassin. He also participated in the film Putney Swope (1969), and the film Cotton Comes to Harlem (1970). He received a Tony Award nomination in 2007 for Best Actor for his role in the play Radio Golf.
