She was born to immigrant parents in Poland and Russia and grew up in a poor environment. She left school because she wanted to work in acting. She worked in a magazine as a model and in a nightclub. She studied drama at the Bishop Lee Dramatic School in Boston. In the forties, she performed many minor roles in films, and she even had the opportunity during the fifties to sign a contract with Warner Bros. In the sixties, she joined television.
