An American actor, born in Brooklyn, New York, USA. He was awarded the Special Jury Prize at Venice Film Festival in 1954 with the cast of Executive Suite. He married 4 times. His credits include Duck Soup (1933), Notorious (1946), The Asphalt Jungle (1950), and Julius Caesar (1953). He was born to middle-class parents in New York City, and his family moved to St. Louis when he was a child. While he was playing football at school, he was spotted by a stage manager from a touring theatrical stock company, so he returned to New York and worked in theater, but his career was hindered by his joining the army. He was known for his roles of aristocrats and for his comedy performances, and while he was filming a movie in Tokyo, he had a heart attack that killed him on May 12, 1956. |
