An American actor who was born in Dallastown, Pennsylvania, USA. He received two Bambi Awards in 1957 and 1970. He had 3 marriages and had 7 children. He is known for Carousel (1956), The Beachcomber (1962), Blood and Black Lace (1964), and The High Chaparral (1967). He was of Scottish, German, and Irish descent, and his father was a minister. After graduating from Greenwood High School in Pennsylvania in 1936, he studied at the Theater School of Dramatic Arts in New York City and worked in Broadway theaters. He participated in an experimental television broadcast before joining the United States Air Force, fighting in World War II. After the war ended, he participated in his first film What Next, Corporal Hargrove? (1945). He presented more than 300 cinematic, television, and theater works. He died on July 6, 1994 in Palisades, California, USA, of lung cancer.
