A British director of Czech origins, born in Ostrava, Czechoslovakia (currently Czech Republic). During World War II, he fought as a pilot with the Czech squadron in the Royal Air Force. He studied natural sciences at Emmanuel College, University of Cambridge, after serving in the army. Subsequently, he started writing for film journals. He is known for The French Lieutenant's Woman (1981) and Saturday Night and Sunday Morning (1960). |
