An American film director known for making musical films. His most famous films are American in Paris (1951) and Gigi (1958) which won him the Academy Award for Best Director in 1959. He is the father of actress Lisa Minnelli. Born February 28, 1903, Chicago, Illinois, United States, he began his life as a costume designer in Chicago. He moved to Broadway and took a job as art director at Radio City Music Hall. In the early 1940s, he turned to film directing. He excelled in presenting musical films and is considered a pioneer of this cinematic style. He won the only Academy Award in his career in 1958 for the film Gigi. He died on July 25, 1986 in Beverly Hills, California, United States |
