An American film director, known for making musical films. His most famous films include An American in Paris (1951) and Gigi (1958), which won him the Academy Award for Best Director in 1959. He was the father of actress Liza Minnelli. Born in Chicago, Illinois, United States, he began his life as a costume designer in there. He moved on to work on Broadway and took a job as art director at Radio City Music Hall. In the early 1940s, he turned to film directing. He excelled in presenting musical films and is considered a pioneer of this genre. He died on July 25, 1986 in Beverly Hills, California, United States. |
