An American actress, born in Birmingham, Alabama, USA. She was married 4 times, gave birth to twins, who died shortly after birth due, and adopted two children. She is known for My Man Godfrey (1936), Stage Door (1937), My Favorite Wife (1940), and Perry Mason (1957).
She obtained her BA from Howard College and studied law at the University of Alabama. By chance, she participated in a competition organized by Paramount Pictures, and although she did not win, this led her to travel to Hollywood where she joined the studio.
After several small roles, she got her chance in many films, such as Death Takes a Holiday (1934) and The Crime of Helen Stanley (1934). She appeared in many distinctive comedic and dramatic roles. She became more interested in working in clothing design, especially children's clothing. She opened a store for clothes designed by her. She died on July 6, 1980 in Los Angeles, California, USA, of leukemia.
