A Portuguese writer, born in Vila Meã, Portugal, and settled in Porto in 1950. She is famous for writing The Sibyl in 1954, which was translated into several European languages. She won the Camões Prize in 2004 for her entire literary work. In addition, she is known for her films, which were adapted from many of her novels by Portuguese filmmaker Manoel de Oliveira, for which she wrote the screenplays. Her works also include biographies, plays, and memoirs. She is known for Abraham's Valley (1993), The Convent (1995), and Inquietude (1998). She died on June 3, 2019, at the age of 96 in Porto, Portugal.
