French cinematographer and director. Before becoming a photojournalist, he spent 11 years in Vietnam, starting in 1945, where he served in the French army in the Indochina War before working as a writer for several French magazines. He then moved into cinema by chance, collaborating with director Jean-Luc Godard on the film Breathless (1960). He is known for A Woman Is a Woman (1961) and Alphaville (1965). His directorial credits include Operation Leopard (1980) and S.A.S. San Salvador (1982), which was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film. He died on November 8, 2016, at the age of 92, after a long illness.
