An American novelist, screenwriter, and theater producer, born in Chicago, Illinois, USA. He is best known for his novel The Kremlin Letter, which was based on his experiences working for the United States, specifically with intelligence, during the 1950s and 1960s. He was the producing manager of the Cherry Lane Theatre in New York City throughout the 1950s and 1960s. Beginning in the late 1960s, he developed a long-standing friendship with screenwriter Paddy Chayefsky, choreographer Bob Fosse, and playwright Herb Gardner. His novel was adapted into a film by director John Huston in 1970. He also wrote the film The Brink's Job in 1978.
